Car or Train?

Let’s start with public transportation.
Switzerland is well known for its train network and in general one of the best transportation systems in the world. You can say that almost every valley will have their own private railway company which will offer train or cable car rides to some beautiful peaks. There are many scenic train rides with absolutely spectacular views and you will experience beautiful Swiss landscapes from the comfort of a cosy train. Furthermore trains are always on time and transportation is very clean.
All this comes with a price where Swiss public transport is one of the most expensive in Europe. There is a simple rule within Switzerland. If public transport’s main purpose is to go to work or back home, it is relatively cheap. But once it functions only for view/activity/tourists purposes, the price will skyrocket. An example is that a cable car ticket from Lauterbrunnen to Murren(a village high up in the mountains) will cost you approx 10 CHF one way, because it is still part of necessary public transportation. But from Murren you can go to Schilthorn which is a mountain with an awesome view and restaurant that will cost you 50 one way, even though the distance you travel is the same. The most expensive option is to buy a ticket on the spot without any pre-booked option, so try to avoid that.
If you don’t mind prices and the rest appeals to you, from here we suggest visiting sbb.ch and find yourself some multi day transportation pass which will fit your purpose the best and will give you best value for your money.
Sbb has an app as well where you can find all the connection timetables and can book tickets directly.

Car

Visiting Switzerland by car has its own advantages.
As there are many train rides where you experience beautiful mountains, the same goes for roads. There are many mountain passes which are well known in Europe and if you drive through those, you will see many sports/fancy cars and motorbikes because people come to enjoy a fun mountain drive. Furthermore, if you just want to enjoy the view, you can stop at many viewpoints, which are amongst the way. Freedom to come and go whenever you want is the biggest advantage.
Downsides, which are a little more common nowadays, are crowded roads. Switzerland is a wealthy country and most families own more than just one car. Highways and most of the road net was not built for the amount of cars which we have nowadays. Add tourist traffic on top of that and you have traffic jams around bigger towns and famous points of interest. This goes hand in hand with parking that can be a problem as well.
Interestingly, a family of 4 might even be cheaper to rent a car than to buy a Swiss travel pass for everybody. This only works if you are not planning to visit too many mountain peaks by cable cars or trains.
So consider what your plan is, where you want to go and what you want to do. That should help you with deciding if you should choose a train or car.
Our opinion here is that the train has the upper hand here. You lose a bit of freedom but you will get a full Swiss experience with everything it offers. Trains might be sometimes crowded at popular tourist spots but you won’t be waiting in traffic jams.
One little tip parking is never free in Switzerland, so always double check that you paid for parking.
