Most people picture Switzerland in winter and think of one thing: skiing. But winter in the Swiss Alps is a lot more than ski slopes — and if skiing isn’t your thing, you’re not out of options.
Villages like Mürren, Grindelwald, and Lauterbrunnen take on a completely different character in winter. Snow-covered streets, frozen waterfalls, Christmas lights reflecting off the mountains — it’s one of the most beautiful versions of this region, and most visitors never see it because they assume it’s only for skiers.
Many summer hiking trails are closed in winter, but there’s still plenty to do. Sledding is a huge part of winter life in the Swiss Alps — not just for kids, but for locals who treat it as seriously as any other mountain sport. Snowshoeing opens up terrain that’s inaccessible any other way. And a guided winter walk through Lauterbrunnen valley, with the 72 waterfalls partially frozen around you, is something that sticks with people long after the trip is over.
